IFFCMH Values

Iowa Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health is a 501c3 statewide advocacy organization working independently and collaboratively with our local community affiliates and the Federal level organization towards a seamless system of care.

We believe that families are "Multi-Stressed" -not dysfunctional... The focus of all services and supports should be on the family and child's strengths, not the flaws...planning of services should be a joint effort of family and professionals...parents know their children best!

Family Focus

Fundamental to the Federation is a focus on family participation and support. Every family has a right to an appropriate, available and accessible support base to meet family-identified needs. Therefore, policies, legislation, funding mechanisms and service systems must utilize the strengths of families by:

  • Ensuring that they are equal partners in the planning, implementation and evaluation of services.
  • Viewing the child as a whole person and the family as a whole unit, rather than emphasizing the disability.
  • Empowering families and children to make decisions about services in their own lives. Encouraging innovative programming that increases options and promotes the integration of services.

Join us this year & wear a green ribbon!

Wear a green ribbon during these observances. It brings awareness to the needs of children with emotional, behavioral, mental and social disabilities and their families across Iowa .

Why Green?

In the 1800s the color green was used to brand people who were labeled “insane.”   The children’s mental health community decided to continue using the color green, but with a completely different focus. Green signifies new life, new growth, and new beginnings. Therefore, we wear the green ribbon to raise public awareness, better the lives of children with serious emotional disorders and show our support of these children and their families.
